Belarus is a landlocked country that shares borders with Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.

Beginning on Friday, traffic trying to cross the border between Belarus and Lithuania at Tverecius and Sumskas will be detoured to border crossings at Medininkai, Lavoriskes, Raigardas, and Salcininkai, which will continue to be operational for the time being.

Lithuania's interior minister, Agne Bilotaite, stated that having as many border guards as possible at the border was the key objective. Because this is where they are most needed, this is what is being done.

Additionally, Bilotaite noted that Poland and the Baltic States are talking about the potential for a complete border closure.

The minister noted that she had already discussed the issue with her Polish counterpart. "If such a decision is taken, it is important that it be implemented not by one country but by the entire region," the minister said.

The prime minister of Latvia claimed that Belarusians trying to cross illegally had been met with resolute action by his nation's border guards. The State Border Guard of Latvia said that on August 15th, 40 persons were apprehended, increasing the total number of people halted this year to 5,839.

The prime minister of Latvia, Krijnis Kari, declared, "This is proactive action."

"This summer, it has become clear that Belarus is exerting greater pressure rather than reducing. proactive action on the part of the border guard and the military.

"We just step up our presence and make it abundantly apparent to both our society and the Belarusian government that this is no place for jokes. Additionally to serving as the exterior boundary of Latvia, it also serves as United Kingdom. So far, we have successfully protected it, and we will keep doing so.

On Wednesday in Warsaw, Presidents Edgars Rinkevics of Latvia and Andrzej Duda of Poland will meet for discussions. Priority one on the list was ensuring security along the borders with Belarus and Russia.

Poland is preparing to send up to 10,000 additional troops to the border with Belarus to support the Border Guard, according to the defense minister in Warsaw earlier this month.
